Millinery Terms
1. Different straws: Baku - an lightweight straw with a dull finish made from the
Buri Palm tree.
2. Balibuntal – a smooth glossy straw that comes from the unopened leaf stems of the Buri palm.
3. Bangkok- A smooth lightweight straw comes from Buntal fibers from the stems f palm leaves.
4. Beaver is a fur produced by plucking of the coarse hairs from the beaver pelt which are brushed with a solution of nitrate of mercury and formed into a thick mat of material, shaped into cones, boiled and rolled to create felt.
5. Bodies – are usually made of felt or straw and are larger than hoods and used for large one piece hats and one piece crowns and brims, also known as capelines.
6. Buckram- a woven cotton fabric that had been sized and is used in the process of blocking fabric covered hats..
7. Buntal - obtained from the white fiber of the Talipot palm tree.8.
8. Buri - obtained from the unopened leaves of the Talipot plant.
9. Blimp - an oversized capeline.
10. Capeline- has the appearance of an unblocked hat and in the form of a circle with a cupped center.
11. Fur Felt- is produced from rabbit fur.
12. Grosgrain – a ribbon used both inside the hat as a sweat band and outside on the crown as decorations.
13. Handmade straws are Tuscan, Leghorn, Milan, Patent Milan, Japan Split, Liséré and,Swiss 
14 . Hat Block - a form, usually of wood used to block crown and brims.
15. Hat Crown - the portion of the hat that sits on top of the head
16. Hat Band - a piece of ribbon, fabric or leather placed on the outside bottom portion of the crown just above the brim.
17. Hat Brim- The part of the hat that extends horizontally from the bottom of the crown and circumvents the crown.
18. Hood - Used in making crowns, pillbox hats, and small brimmed hats. It has the shape of a cone with a rounded top, and can be paper straw, natural straw or wool
19. Horsehair is a stiff light braid used to trim hats and comes from the manes and tails of horses and is made into braids in numerous countries. Horsehair resembles clear screen.
20. Linen Straw - smooth, closely woven straw with the look of linen
21. Liséré is a French word meaning binding and is a natural straw braid, that is a shiny, stiff, narrow braid, made from split straw, and is imported from Switzerland, Belgium, China, and Japan.
22. Machine-made straws are Chip, Ramie, Horsehair, and more
23. Machine-Made Braids use silk, cotton, wool and mohair, silk of different grades, artificial silk, cord, hemp, ramie.
24. Milan Hemp is a popular braid is known as Milan hemp and is a hemp braid in the Milan weave of seven ends.
25. Milan is one of the better straws and is hand-blocked and hand-sewed usually.
26. Millinery belting - Grosgrain ribbon which can be swirled with the use of an iron to fit inside a hat where the crown meets the brim. It is usually made of 50% cotton and 50% rayon.
27. Push pins- metal pins with flat heads used when tying down buckram or any other materials or fabric in the creation of frame making.
28. Raffia - derived from the raffia palm of Madascar, a strong pliable straw, that is braided. Used as braid to produce raffia hats
29. Ramie is obtained from the stem, is long, glossy, silky, and stronger than hemp and is very durable and is waterproof.
30. Sweat band- a piece of ribbon, leather or fabric that circles the inside lower portion of the crown just above the brim to absorb perspiration and protect the hat from facial oils.
