I had a thought about a week ago; wouldn’t it be wonderful if all the US millinery artisans came together occasionally? The millinery artisans I am referring to at this point are individual milliners who design or create hats.
I am also referring to those creating the skillfully crafted wooden art forms we call hat blocks, because without them many designs could not be accomplished. There is not a week that passes, where someone is not bidding on E-bay for a hat block. This is likely because most are made outside the US, and the cost and shipping are unaffordable for many. The fact is there is a handful of hat block makers in the US whose prices may become even more affordable if more hatters utilized their products.
Certainly making this information available will cause the art of millinery to become more competitive, but it will also allow those wanting more information access to it. I say this knowing personally certain aspects about the art has for years been well kept secrets many did not choose to share in the past.
I know although we are all milliners, many of us are very good and specialize at certain aspects of our art. I have met many who make beautiful accessories to embellish hats. There are those specializing in draping, blocking and working with sinamay, and most recently I met a new friend who taught herself to use a straw hat making sewing machine. I am using this page to highlight a few of Mrs. Nabors designs, along with the millinery machine she has mastered using. If you know of anyone whose specializes in a particular aspect of millinery I would love to showcase their art here. By the way, my specialty is covering on the frame, which I will share with you in the near future. Thank you for visiting my site and I look forward to meeting you all personally in the near future.
